UPDATES

Assalamualaikum & Hello everyone!

It has been a hectic few months for me, so forgive me for not updating much on this blog. Truth is, it's easier to make updates via Facebook and a lot of customers reach me through FB too. The picture albums there are more organized, so head over there for much easier viewing of my previous work, OK.

Now, I've never mentioned it here, but I can also provide special dietary cakes and cupcakes. So if you're in Penang and looking for something vegan (eggless & dairy-free) or gluten-free (no flour) or sugarless/sugar-free, do shoot me an email and we'll talk.

Deliveries to Penang Island and surrounding areas is still available, but due to rising costs, I'll have to increase the delivery charge. You would understand, right? The fuel, time, energy, not to mention, vehicle maintenance, and the worst of all, traffic jams - they can just zap you dry :)

Hugs & kisses to all my loyal customers. Love you guys lots!

Over The Rainbow

A few days before Eid, Dyanna texted me and asked about rainbow cakes. I've made this cake before for Nunu's birthday last year but never planned to put it on sale since it's so leceh to make, plus I couldn't imagine using so much food colour! I've always wanted to keep my bakes as natural as possible, but let's face it, this awesome cake is irresistible!

photo googled from here

Baby Akim Turns Two!

Not many knows that my daughter Nunu has a little brother - whom is not my son.

Baby Akim was very close to Nunu when she was at her previous kindy. He's the kindy principal's son, and he adores Kakak Nunu to the max. Even the principal's parents took a liking to Nunu.

Now that Nunu goes to another school, I was told by his mom that Baby Akim misses his Kakak Nunu every now and then.

Tapi bila jumpa masa birthday party dia ni boleh buat-buat blur pulak! Haha... kids.

Anyway, Happy Birthday Akim. Kak Nunu & Aunty Anne love you veeeeery much! Muacks!

Jong Jong Inai

It was a busy and eventful week for me. I had orders lining up, tonnes of paperwork and chores to do amongst other responsibilities. And to top it off, I had a minor accident while walking to the back of my house to get my dry laundry last Thursday. I won't get into the details but here's a clue anyway, it was a case of 'Jong Jong Inai'. If you know how the rhyme goes (not the hiphop song ah), you'll know what happened to me :)

Anyway, the show must go on. So many people getting engaged, the most important person  which was my dear adik angkat Cik Apple Mint. No matter how exhausted and incapable I felt to go on with this cake, I soldiered on and luckily got some help from my aunt (who is Cik Apple Mint's mak angkat) to rearrange the sugar flowers bouquet for me.

All I had to do was bake the most gorgeous moist chocolate cake, ice it, roll out the fondant and cover the cake (not easy to keep it pristine white!) and trim the edges with a butterfly ribbon. All done by limping all over the kitchen and my work table. Now I know how an orang kelainan upaya feels :(  Allah baru uji sikit...

Simple cake jer ye dik, nama pun sponsor... :D

What a way to end such a crazy week. Balik rumah lepas makan kenduri (nasi putih, gulai ikan kering, ikan talang masin & ulam jer tapi terbaeeeek punyalah! opps lupa, also got bihun goreng straight from the kawah gilababas punya best) terus tidor terbongkang and finally had time to put my injured foot up to recuperate!

Booyah!

This cake is a case of order-harini esok-nak, yet again. Well, being in this business to for more than a year, I probably should know better, but what the heck. I'm going to make a set of hantaran cuppies for Kak Munirah again, so takkan nak selit one cake for her anak bujang sorang pun tak boleh kan? It won't be fair coz previously I made the birthday cakes for her other son and daughter, and this time the birthday boy wanted the exact same cake as the sister's. Takkan tak boleh kan?

Boleh, tapi rupe macam ini ajer ler...

For Mubin yang gila computer games, Happy Birthday!

Blossom

I had butterflies in my tummy to present my first stacked wedding cake.

It's not that big, the bottom layer is 10 inches in diameter, the middle 8 inches and the top is 7 inches (which I think 6 inches would be more apropriate considering the size ratio between the bottom and the second layer) and the whole cake is +- 8 inches tall.

The cake is a mix of strawberry, blueberry and vanilla flavoured cake with strawberry buttercream. Due to the rainy weather, the fondant got a little wet *stress*, but I hope it doesn't look so disasterous since I don't use dowels at all to support the cake (small only mah).

This is a cake that wouldn't cost a bomb, so to brides/grooms/wedding planners out there who has a tight budget but want a grand looking cake, do drop me a line yah.

Thank you soooo much to my sis Umi for the order. Selamat Pengantin Baru to her cousin Eida and Faris.

Soccer Field for Jazmin

Haha, soccer field for the abang, and strawberry field for the adik.

Jazmin's cake is moist chocolate cake with dark chocolate ganache. After looking at this cake, Jazmin's younger brother, Mubin, pun tak nak kalah. He's demanding from his mother a similar cake for his birthday this April, if not better!

Happy 17th Birthday Jazmin! Be a good son to your parents and a good abang to your adik-adik, yah!

Strawberry Field for Sufiah

This is an 8" inch strawberry and cream buttercake filled with vanilla buttercream made for Kak Munirah's daughter, Sufiah.

Kak Munirah tak kisah sangat about the whole look of the cake, except that it must be PINK! Hehe, I like. Janji sedap. I went almost completely loco because I couldn't get the fresh cream smooth. Looks like it's high time to get that spinning cake stand.

Alhamdulillah, the feedback that I got from everyone was simply amazing. Actually, the party was a double birthday celebration, Sufiah's and her elder brother's, Jazmin's. His cake will be in the next entry.

Thank you, Kak Munirah and Happy 12th Birthday Sufiah.

AMIRA & AZMY

I love the fact that cakes are legitimate gifts at any kind of celebration - especially weddings.

So I made the cake below for a wedding of a VIP's daughter. Rosewater marbled butter cake (no pistachio, out of stock). Sajalah suka-suka kan. Nak bagi hadiah mahal2 takde bajet :D

A cake like this when they've already have their own for as wedding and hantaran cakes? Why not?  An extra cake would always be appreciated, methinks. Most weddings I've been to, the cakes were rarely passed around to the guests after the cake cutting ceremony. If the cake is modest in size, it will be rushed into the house after the cut, which is meant to be saved to family members after the event. Sometimes, as a compensation, guests will get a cupcake or a muffin as wedding favours.

Tapi cupcake/muffin tu biarlah lebih kurang sama kualitinya macam wedding cake yang gah tu. If not, tak payahlah buat cake cutting ceremony depan guests semua. Buat je belah malam ke or any other time, just a small ceremony among family members or small circle of friends.

Or... or or or, do guests really expect to see the bride and groom to cut the cake, and NOT expect to get a piece? Is it just me who feels disappointed when I don't get to taste the cake?

Isk, membebel pulak. Anyway, this is just my two cents (one cent pun tak laku kot). No offense to anyone. But I don't know, is there a code of conduct for cake cutting ceremonies in our culture?

QUEEN OF HEARTS

Uploading the last photo of Yana's hantaran cake. This was a huge heart shaped cake, orange butter cake, filled with vanilla buttercream filling & finished with fresh cream. The fondant heart shaped deco was supposed to be hard, made a few days earlier, but at the last minute, turned soft & gooey when it rained the night before the day of delivery. My solution was to use cardboard cutouts and stick the fondant shapes together to form the firm shapes.

Sometimes you just gotta cheat, but as long as you declare & clarify to your customer, there shouldn't be a problem.

I couldn't trace the original design which Yana sent to me, so if you've seen this design elsewhere, do me a favour and notify me please.

NIKON D300S CAMERA CAKE

A special request by Yanafuziana of Lensabisu who just celebrated her big day on the 31st Oct 2010.

This was a big task for me, my first wedding cake. I'm sure you cake makers out there were especially attached and anxious with your firsts, am I right?

I am willing to share some tips to help other new bakers out there who, like me, scour the whole worldwideweb for tutorials. In another post, maybe.

My heartfelt thanks to her for entrusting me with this huge responsibility. Congratulations to both you and your now life-partner, Izudin.

p/s: Yana, I can't apologize to you enough about the fondant yg lembik balik due to the rainy weather. I'm truly, truly am sorry & thank you for being such a nice and understanding bride :)

MY FIRST PRINCESS DOLL CAKE

When I was around 3-4, I had this fixation with princesses. I was probably overdosed on Disney's Sleeping Beauty as I have my standard when it comes to how a princess should look like. She must have long blond hair, wears a long gown, a tiara, gloves, the works.

And I will torture my aunt, who could have been around 10-11 at the time, to draw me these princesses, the exact same princesses, everyday. All the time. Whenever I feel like it. And what makes her exasperated so much with me was, I never allowed the princesses she drew to have any sense of modern fashion. Like the late Princess Di's short hair for instance.

Now, karma strikes back. My own daughter is obsessed with everything princessy (which I think is a good thing considering she does have the tendency to lose all inhibitions) but thank goodness, she draws her own princesses and only asks for my help when she's having some trouble.

I made this princess doll cake, out of redemption, for my aunt's daughter, Farah. A way of me saying 'Thank you' for all those torturous years and annoyance I inflicted on her.

Red velvet and marble butter cake lepas kena terkam. Crumb coated with cream cheese and frosted with blueberry buttercream. Got great reviews about the cake especially about it's unique taste, they couldn't get enough of it.

For the party, they were having a cupcake decorating contest, so I supplied them with some mini cuppies and the materials, buttercream, nozzles, sprinkles, etc. I tell ya, it was fun but hard work getting 20+ kiddies under control.

Farah, the birthday girl.

Ahmad, the little brother.

Syamin, the elder sister.

And this, the winner!

Happy Birthday Fatimatuzzahrah!

PINEAPPLES REMIND ME OF BIKINIS

Yeah, seriously. No thanks to Spongebob and his thorny lair. I was this close to naming my pineapple cupcakes 'Bikini Bottom'... though the name does conjure up mental images of Hawaii, bikini babes & summer beaches.

But scrap that name. After getting some suggestion from friends in FB, these sweet pineapple cuppies are aptly named 'Pina Tierra'.

Both orders were by Kak Liz, a few weeks apart actually. These are pretty old photos, I can't even remember when they were taken.

The days were so warm around that time and chitchatting with Kak Liz on FB about the weather lead us to the creation of my pineapple cupcakes. Kak Liz is the only person I know who's crazy enough to eat pineapple right out of a cold can.

Two weeks after she had my pineapple cupcakes, she asked for an old classic - pineapple upside down cake, simply coz she couldn't find any place selling this cake.

So, thanks Kak Liz, for believing in me.

THE 'LESS-IS-MORE' CAKE

An old school friend was about to get married last week and requested a simple chocolate as a 'hantaran'. Masnita's exact specifications were 1) the cake must be good and (2) the theme is black and white and (3) less is more.

Hmm... truth be told, being a simple person even, I had quite a hard time settling on a simple design on the cake and still make it look presentable on a dulang hantaran.

Flavour is moist chocolate cake filled and frosted with dark and luxurious chocolate ganache, sprinkled with white chocolate shavings.

The gorgeous and meletops habis bride and groom. My daughter Nunu couldn't take her eyes off you, Ita. And the lauk pauk kenduri hasil gotong-royong orang kampung was just superb okeh. Memang puas hati dapat makan eventhough nak compare dengan presentation yang catering punya tapi bila bab taste, hampeh. Tasteless!

Selamat Pengantin Baru, Ita & Eddy. Semoga berbahagia ke anak cucu!
